Vacation time is almost here, and the anticipation has brought me back to the days of dead week and finals week right before summer vacation. I have two weeks of work left before I leave for vacation No. 1 this summer, which puts me at the start of dead week.
My mind-set is basically the same as it was during dead week, but since I don’t have finals to prep for I’ve made my own work goals to accomplish before I leave. My goal this week (aka dead week) is to focus on all the big projects that need to at least be started and half way finished before I leave. I’ve made my to-do list and prioritized each project. I’ve written more brochure and print ad copy today than I ever thought possible and tomorrow I will tackle a 12-page system newsletter to be published the Friday I leave for South Carolina. Perfect timing.
Next week, finals week, will focus on the little details and tasks that get thrown my way from time to time. I need to send a few projects to the printer, pick up some completed signs, clean my desk, draft a few emails and most importantly write my out-of-office response.
There may be some late nights this week to ensure the big projects are complete, but again my mind is set to college dead week and nothing can steer me off course (ok, I may drink more this week and next than I ever did while studying for finals, but that is expected). Good luck to my fellow vacationers as you prepare for your week (or two) off work. Let the work begin!
